The birth of fiber-reinforced concrete is not recent
but it’s relentlessly evolving.
In 2018, when I first heard about fiber-reinforced concrete, I simply “walked by it.”
It took nearly a year until I saw the benefits it offers and delved into its various applications.
It has so many advantages over reinforced concrete that at first, I couldn’t even believe it. It may not be able to replace steel in every case, but there are numerous applications where it’s a real alternative to concrete reinforcement mesh.
In jobs where the primary tasks of the mesh are load distribution and crack prevention, you can replace concrete reinforcement mesh with macrofiber structural concrete.
Let’s look at the advantages:
- Much simpler to use: no stacking or assembly required.
- Its volume is a fraction of concrete reinforcement mesh. 500 kg of concrete reinforcement mesh can be replaced by 40 kg of macrofibers.
- Its light weight makes transportation much cheaper.
- Not hazardous.
- Much cheaper than concrete mesh.
- Doesn’t corrode.
- Reinforces concrete in three dimensions, not just in one plane.
- Easy to drill, no drill breakage.
- Can be demolded sooner.
- Requires much less manual labor.
- Significantly faster execution.
- Easy to store, does not deteriorate.
- Procurement is extremely simple: you can pick it up from the mailman in 3 days.
- Resistant to salt, alkalis, and chemicals.
- Manufacturing and transportation have much less environmental impact than concrete reinforcement mesh.
