The weight of concrete steel mesh is an eternal topic during concrete work.

We are not interested in finding out how many kilograms it will be on the ground, but rather because there are numerous tasks and hassles associated with it, so we need to know what to expect.

However, there is a much simpler and more cost-effective solution than using concrete steel mesh if the purpose is load distribution and crack prevention,

But about that a bit later. For now, you came to inquire about the weight of the concrete steel mesh, and we will show you that:

The weight of concrete steel mesh

The weight of reinforcing steel

…but I mentioned at the beginning of the article that there is a simpler and cheaper solution if you don’t want to go this way:

…and you don’t want to carry, use spacers, and stumble over the concrete steel mesh during the concrete work.

But if you want to concrete much more inexpensively and easily, then choose the ArmoTec structural macrofiber,

with which you can replace the concrete steel mesh in these tasks:

patterned concrete
parking lot
slab foundation for lightweight structures
assembly concrete
floor slab
pool bottom
sidewalk
pergola
filling of formwork blocks (if not retaining wall)
etc.

You don’t have to transport the ArmoTec structural fiber because the courier will deliver it to your doorstep in two days.

Transporting the reinforcing mesh is a very cumbersome task.

The smaller, 4 mm thick reinforcing mesh weighs only 23 kg, or less, and can be folded. I have seen it countless times. Just don’t do it! You can never straighten it again to properly position it at the right point in the concrete structure. It will be so wavy that you’ll be lucky if you can place it in a 10 cm thick structure without it sticking out. Moreover, it’s impossible to move around a 4 mm mesh during concreting without it bending even more. By the time you finish concreting, you’ll be left with just a wavy piece of metal in the structure.

Not to mention that the 4 mm mesh doesn’t really reinforce the concrete; it has little role in load distribution.

If you are making concrete that can withstand the weight of a car (or a piano on its four small legs), then you should consider at least a 5 mm, preferably 6 mm mesh, with a grid spacing of 10×10 cm.

The weight of the 6 mm concrete steel mesh is almost 50 kg, with dimensions of 2.15×5 meters. Because of this, you can only transport it by truck. Even if the hardware store or steel mill is nearby, you still have to pay at least 10,000 HUF for transportation, but in Budapest, we received a quote of 28,000 HUF + VAT for a 15 km distance at the end of 2022. This rate has likely not decreased since then, only increased. Additionally, it’s not enough for grandma to stay at home when it arrives; you need strong guys for unloading. On the other hand, grandma can receive ArmoTec, as it weighs only a few kilograms, and the mail carrier might even bring it into the house if asked nicely.

Structural macrofibers are not only much easier to use than concrete steel mesh, but they also have numerous other advantages.

Strengthens the concrete in 3 dimensions at every point, whereas the mesh operates only in one plane.
Reduces shrinkage cracks to zero, meaning that no small or large cracks can form during the concrete curing process, resulting in a much more durable concrete in the end.
Significantly accelerates construction by replacing processes associated with concrete steel mesh.
Enhances job safety by eliminating accidents related to the use of concrete steel.
Easy to transport—500 kg of concrete steel mesh can be replaced with 25-50 kg of ArmoTec, delivered to your doorstep by a mail carrier instead of a truck.
Easy to work with—simply add it to the concrete mixer, no transportation, stacking, rebar installation, or hassle required.
Almost zero labor demand.
Does not corrode—eliminating the issue of corrosion that affects steel enclosed in concrete over time due to acids. ArmoTec prevents this entirely.
Easy to drill through fiber-reinforced concrete, with no drill breakage.
Much cheaper than concrete steel mesh.
Leaves a much smaller ecological footprint—its production and transportation contribute only a fraction of the environmental pollution caused by concrete steel.
Additionally, by replacing steel with ArmoTec, you can reduce the amount of corrosion-resistant concrete needed, further contributing significantly to environmental protection. If environmental conservation is important to you, then this is your material.
At least 50% of concrete structures are used to protect concrete steel from corrosion. With macrofibers, this protection is unnecessary, allowing for a substantial reduction in the amount of concrete needed.
